Your Random Mid 80's to Early 90's Baseball Player of the Day: Alan Ashby!

You may ask, what is interesting about Alan Ashby. Well, I'm not going to lie to you.

There is really very little interesting about Alan Ashby. If he wasn't playing professional baseball, I think all of us could easily see him working as a manager at a local Denny's or as your Geometry teacher in 10th grade. Instead, he caught for numerous different teams during a 16-year career.

Now, sure, 20 years ago, playing baseball still earned you more cash than being a food-service manager or a high-school teacher. But probably not a ton more for a guy like Alan Ashby, which brings us to our next question: why? And the answer is quite simple, Alan Ashby just fucking loved the game of baseball. Alan Ashby is a Mormon. And what that says to me is that he wasn't in it for the fame. He wasn't in it for the '70's porn-style three-somes with Glenn Davis. No, Alan Ashby was there to play ball.

As a reward, Mr. Ashby had the opportunity to catch three no-hitters, and to homer from both sides of the plate in the same game.

But, again, there's nothing really interesting about him. So why, you might ask, did he get the nod as our Mid '80s-to-Early '90s player of the day? Well, I wanted an excuse to post my All-Mormon Team, so here it goes.

C Alan Ashby
1B Wally Joyner
2B Jeff Kent
3B Garth Iorg
SS Bobby Crosby
LF Harmon Killebrew
CF Jacoby Ellsbury
RF Dale Murphy

SP Jack Morris
SP Roy Halladay
SP Vern Law
SP Bruce Hurst
SP Shawn Estes

RP Kyle Farnsworth
RP Mike Fetters
RP Jim Gott

All-in-all, not too shabby. All my sourcing came from http://www.famousmormons.net , in case anyone is interested.

So, the good: got to catch Nolan Ryan; Catcher on Riley's All-Mormon Team; sweet mustache.

The bad: missed out on all three-somes; career .245 average; only the second-best Ashby ever.
